SUD2017 triennial
Salon Urbain de Douala, SUD, is a triennial public art festival, offered to the city of Douala by the association doual’art.
The theme of the 4th edition of SUD2017 is "The Human Space", dedicated to the Youth. It was held in December 2017, from the 5th to the 10th, punctuated by festive inaugurations of the 22 commissioned works as well as their activations through performances, concerts and three mornings of intellectual meetings coordinated by Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux with the guests at share their thoughts on “La Place de l'Humain” with Godefroy Bidima, Hemley Boum, Geneviève Koubi, Iolanda Pensa, Bonaventure Soh Bejeng, Yasmine Terki, Jean-Charles Tall and some artists.
This project is part of a reflection conducted with the scientific committee formed in SUD2017 on the place and role of art as revealing history (s) but also creator of meaning in the city.
In a context of strong dehumanisation and disempowerment of adults, doual'art wished by this 4th edition of the SUD, to mark the city with works of art that interpret the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which has for vocation to arouse a desire to share and to live better together. The general guest curator of SUD2017 Cécile Bourne-Farrell thus commissioned 16 international contemporary artists, including 11 from the African continent around the following themes declined by the invited artists which are the following:
UDHR - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an instrument for regulating relations between men and a tool for the emancipation of peoples. Artists: Lucas Grandin, Kamiel Verschuren, Jean-Jacques Kanté, Hervé Yamguen, Mustapha Akrim, Michèle Magema, Emile Youmbi, Hervé Youmbi, Erik Goengrich.
HUMAN AND HISTORY - Humans relate to the past. We are human because we have a history, because we carry a history, because we belong to a historical trajectory. Artists: Sylvie Blocher, Justin Ebanda, Jean David Nkot.
THE HUMAN AND THE URBAN - Human has a relation to space and to the other. The living environment, depending on its layout, strengthens our humanity or not. Urban planners stimulate (or not) living together. Artists: Mustapha Akrim, Iván Argote, Justine Gaga, Michèle Magema, Trinity Session, Kamiel Verschuren.
A VOICE TO the YOUTH - Humans also exist through their stories and their public speaking. This shared word can also help him to 'emancipate himself and escape from reality. Human beings are capable of utopia and dreams. Artists: Erik Goengrich, Lucas Grandin and Kamiel Verschuren, Chourouk Hriech, Jean-Jacques Kanté, Trinity Session, Hervé Yamguen, Emile Youmbi.
For the SUD2017, A space was also dedicated to the previous South at the doual'art space which was also the place of restitution of the research carried out by the artists for the realisation of their projects and of the questions raised during the numerous workshops and conversations carried out with the scientific committee, the students, the NGOs, the teaching teams of the 4 partner schools and with the inhabitants of the city of Douala.

The SUD, 2007, 2010, 2013
The third edition of the triennial festival, SUD2013’s theme was “Douala Métamorphoses” and took place from December 3 to 10, 2013. Metamorphosis, as understood by doual'art, refers to the creative transformation of a specific urban space. Since SUD2013, artistic interventions in public space are now thought of at the level of a neighbourhood, a square, a crossroads or a place. The change is taking place through a global aesthetic development: at the same time artistic, social and economic. It participates in the invention of an identity shared by all city dwellers.
The second edition of SUD2010, was held from December 4 to 11, 2010 in several districts of the city, the theme of SUD2010 was water. The SUD2010 process, started in 2008, consists of artistic projects in the neighbourhoods, an Ars & Urbis reflection on art and the city and finally, a publication and a documentary currently being edited.
The SUD2007 took place from December 9 to 16, 2007. The artists had the free field to work on urban themes specific to the city. All the artistic proposals tackled hot or topical subjects: tradition / modernity, urbanity and city noise, urban mobility, the poetics of urban lighting, small “second zone” trades, the art world, flouted by cultural policies, African continental integration, historical-geographical landmark ...Performances, temporary installations, happenings animated the life of the city, which was also enriched by 3 works of contemporary public art as well as public equipment (fire hydrant and walkway) designed by creators, in total for ten years of the SUD, more than 60 works were inaugurated in a festive way, some in performative form, others in a lasting way. Half of them are offered to the city for the doualas.

Le Salon Urbain de Douala, SUD, est un festival triennal d’art public, offert à la ville de Douala par l’association doual’art.
Le thème de la 4ème édition du SUD2017 est « La place de l’Humain », dédié à la jeunesse. Il s’est tenu en décembre 2017, du 5 au 10, ponctué d’inaugurations festives des 22 œuvres commissionnées ainsi que de leurs activations par des performances, concerts et de trois matinées de rencontres intellectuelles coordonnées par Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux avec les invités à partager leurs réflexions sur « La Place de l’Humain » avec Godefroy Bidima, Hemley Boum, Geneviève Koubi, Iolanda Pensa, Bonaventure Soh Bejeng, Yasmine Terki, Jean-Charles Tall et certains artistes.
Cette triennale s’inscrit dans une réflexion menée avec le comité scientifique[1] [2]constitué pour le SUD2017 sur la place et le rôle de l’art comme révélateur d’histoire(s) mais aussi créateur de sens dans la ville. Dans un contexte de forte déshumanisation et de déresponsabilisation des adultes, doual’art a souhaité par cette 4ème édition du Salon Urbain de Douala, marquer la ville avec des œuvres d’art qui interprètent la Déclaration Universelle des Droits de l’Homme, qui a pour vocation de susciter un désir de partage et de mieux-vivre ensemble. La commissaire invitée du SUD2017 Cécile Bourne-Farrell a ainsi commissionné 16 artistes contemporains internationaux, dont 11 du continent africain autour des thématiques suivantes déclinées par les artistes invités.
DUDH - La Déclaration Universelle des Droits de l’Homme est un instrument de régulation des relations entre les hommes et un outil d’émancipation des peuples. L’HUMAIN ET L’HISTOIRE - L’humain a un rapport au passé. Nous sommes humains parce que nous avons une histoire, parce que nous portons une histoire, parce que nous appartenons à̀ une trajectoire historique. Artistes : Sylvie Blocher, Justin Ebanda, Jean David Nkot.
L’HUMAIN ET L’URBAIN L’humain a un rapport à l’espace et à l’autre. Le cadre de vie, selon son aménagement, renforce ou non notre humanité́. Les aménageurs urbains stimulent (ou non) le vivre ensemble. Artistes : Mustapha Akrim, Iván Argote, Justine Gaga, Michèle Magema, Trinity Session, Kamiel Verschuren.
PAROLE À LA JEUNESSE L’humain existe aussi par son récit et sa prise de parole publique. Cette parole partagée peut aussi l’aider à̀ s’émanciper et à s’évader du réel L’humain est capable d’utopie et de rêve. Artistes : Erik Goengrich, Lucas Grandin et Kamiel Verschuren, Chourouk Hriech, Jean-Jacques Kanté, Trinity Session, Hervé Yamguen, Emile Youmbi.
Pour le SUD2017, dans l’espace de doual’art un espace était également dédié au Sud précédents. Il était le lieu de restitution des recherches menées par les artistes pour la réalisation de leurs projets et des questions suscitées lors des nombreux workshops et conversations menées avec le comité scientifique, les élèves, les équipes pédagogiques des 4 établissements scolaires partenaires avec les habitants de la ville de Douala.

Les SUD, 2007, 2010, 2013
La troisième édition du festival triennal, SUD2013 a eu pour thème “Douala Métamorphoses” et s’est déroulé du 3 au 10 décembre 2013. La métamorphose, telle que l’entend doual’art, désigne la transformation créative d’un espace urbain spécifique. Depuis SUD2013, les interventions artistiques dans l’espace public sont désormais pensées à l’échelle d’un quartier, d’une place, d’un carrefour ou d’un lieu-dit. La mutation s’opère à travers un aménagement esthétique global : à la fois artistique, social et économique. Elle participe à l’invention d’une identité partagée par l’ensemble des citadins.
La deuxième édition du SUD2010, Salon Urbain de Douala, festival triennal d’art public, s’est tenu du 4 au 11 décembre 2010 dans plusieurs quartiers de la ville de Douala. Le thème du SUD2010 était l’eau.
Le processus SUD2010, démarré en 2008, consiste en des chantiers artistiques dans les quartiers, en une réflexion Ars & Urbis sur l’art et la ville et enfin, en une publication et un documentaire en cours d’édition.
Le SUD2007 s’est déroulé du 9 au 16 décembre 2007. Les artistes ont eu le champ libre pour travailler sur des thématiques urbaines spécifiques à la ville de Douala. L’ensemble des propositions artistiques ont abordé des sujets brûlant ou d’actualité : tradition/modernité, urbanité et bruits de la ville, mobilité urbaine, poétique de l’éclairage urbain, petits métiers de « seconde zone », monde de l’art bafoué par les politiques culturelles, intégration continentale africaine, repère historico-géographique…
Performances, installations temporaires, happenings ont animé la vie de la cité, laquelle s’est également enrichie de 3 œuvres d’art public contemporain ainsi que d’équipements publics (borne-fontaine et passerelle) dessinés par des créateurs, au total depuis dix ans du SUD, plus de 60 œuvres ont été inaugurées de façon festive, certains sous forme performative d’autre de façon pérenne. La moitié d’entre elles sont offertes à la ville pour les doualas.
