Shaun Gladwell “Pacific-Undertow Sequence (Bondi)”

A unique presentation of artist Shaun Gladwell’s work “Pacific-Undertow Sequence (Bondi)” (2011) will be given at the Lavomatic Studio of Seamus Farrell, 6 rue Claude Monet, 93400 Saint-Ouen, on April 19th-May 21st and on appointment. 06 08 09 78 26.

Shaun Gladwell’s practice has critically developed from personal experiences during his formative years. Born in 1972 in Sydney, his work explores a variety of media, particularly utilising video in the past few years. Notable recent installations are put into perspective through historical models, which he claims as constitutive of his work, stemming from this knowledge of the body as understood through the practices of skateboarding, motocross and surfing as forms of choreography.

Gladwell’s work makes a point to experiment with relatively traditional notions of gender and its surrounding conceptions by negating dynamic stages of the body. The body is also placed in association with romantic landscapes and the notion of the sublime through contemporary gestures of movement such as skateboarding and break-dancing. In his practice, Gladwell stages meetings between art and other disciplines or activities, in such way destabilising the notion of art. Furious cross bike jumps are edited into various frames, suggesting a variety of interpretations, at once poetic, hypnotic and sometimes even meditative—despite what one might first consider.

A master of indirectness, Shaun Gladwell introduces us to consider our contemporary in new ways.
