Exhibition of Mohssin Harraki, at the Lavomatic, Studio Seamus Farrell, 6 rue Claude Monet, 93400 Saint-Ouen, from 10 to 20 January 2009
Studio Seamus Farrell opens its doors to the public for the first time with an exhibition of a young artist, Mohssin Harraki.
This former Laundromat converted into an artist's studio is a place of work and also of exhibition which will open from time to time to young creation with the help of the association Chooseone.org, based in Saint-Ouen, to make known and diffuse the work of contemporary creation. Mohssin Harraki finishes this year his last year at the school of Fine Arts of Dijon. This artist, who works with video, photography and performance, pays particular attention to our world, where the social and cultural references are not those he knows from Morocco, where he was born in 1981 and where he studied for part of his studies in Tetouan and then in France, in Toulon. The first series of videos shown here questions certain social issues in a very modest way by interviewing his counterparts, that is, artists with whom he has had the opportunity to collaborate or work in the past year. The questions posed to these more or less known artists have nothing to do with art, but question racism in current events such as the election of Barack Obama or that of Mayor Rotterdam. Will these changes change anything in the world? Does racism exist in the world because of religious or political power or money? The duration of these videos varies from 6 to 11 minutes, enough time to react and exchange with the other visitors of the exhibition. The artist has tried to capture the reaction of the people around him. Mohssin Harraki would like to make a series of testimonies, like a video-book, depending on the current events and the people who agree to talk about such sensitive issues in front of the camera. In a previous work, the artist had carried out a project entitled "Viande du Maroc" (2007) which consisted of dressing up a caravan in which he lived for 3 months. He covered the caravan with bar codes indicating that it was meat, a product from Morocco .... Here too, directly in the public space, the artist questions his contemporaries in his own way. In another project, "Le Jeûne" (2007), he intervened in a square in Toulon, where he put two chairs and a table to discuss. Mohssin Harraki tries to put his fellow artists in a different situation from the one they think they know, because often artists talk about art, but not about current events. Mohssin Harraki often proceeds by shifting people's interests to another field, which also concerns a larger proportion of people.

Studio Seamus Farrell s’ouvre pour la première fois au public avec l’exposition d’un jeune artiste, Mohssin Harraki.
Cet ancien Lavomatic convertit en atelier d’artiste est un lieu de travail et aussi d’exposition qui s’ouvrira de temps en temps à la jeune création avec le concours de l’association Chooseone.org, basée à Saint-Ouen, pour faire connaître et diffuser le travail de la création contemporaine.
Mohssin Harraki termine cette année sa dernière année à l’école des Beaux-arts de Dijon. Cet artiste qui travaille autant avec la vidéo, la photographie ou la performance, porte une attention particulière sur notre monde où les repères sociaux et culturels ne sont pas ceux qu’il connaît du Maroc où il est né en 1981 et où il a fait une partie de ses études à Tétouan et après en France, à Toulon. La première série de vidéos montrées ici questionne certains enjeux sociaux d’une façon très modeste en interrogeant ses homologues, c’est-à-dire, des artistes avec lesquels il a eu l’occasion de collaborer ou de travailler l’année passée. Les questions posées à ces artistes plus ou moins connus n’ont rien à voir à priori avec l’art, mais questionne le racisme dans l’actualité comme par par exemple à l’occasion de l’élection de Barack Obama ou celle du Maire Rotterdam. Est-ce que ces changements vont modifier quelque chose dans le monde ? Est-ce que le racisme existe au monde à cause du pouvoir religieux ou politique ou de l’argent ? La durée de ces vidéos varie de 6 à 11 minutes, temps suffisant pour réagir et échanger avec les autres visiteurs de l’exposition. L’artiste a essayé de capter la réaction des personnes qui l’entourent. Il ne s’agit donc pas de documentaire, mais plutôt un témoignage sur la façon dont ces artistes voient le monde à un moment donné.
Mohssin Harraki aimerait faire une série de témoignages, comme un livre-vidéo en fonction de l’actualité et de personnes qui acceptent de parler de questions aussi sensibles devant la caméra. Dans un travail antérieur, l’artiste avait réalisé un projet intitulé « Viande du Maroc » (2007) qui consistait à costumiser une caravane dans laquelle il a habité durant 3 mois. Il a recouvert la caravane de codes barre indiquant qu’il s’agissait de viande, de produit en provenance du Maroc …. Là aussi, directement dans l’espace public, l’artiste questionne à sa façon ses contemporains. Dans un autre projet « le Jeûne » (2007) il est intervenu sur une place à Toulon où il a mit deux chaises et une table, pour discuter.
Mohssin Harraki cherche à mettre ses collègues-artistes dans une situation différente de celle qu’ils pensent connaître, car souvent entre artiste on parle d’art, mais pas d’actualité . Mohssin Harraki procède souvent en déplaçant les intérêts des personnes dans un autre domaine et qui concerne aussi une plus large proportion de personnes.
